Three characteristics that describe me best are:
- Passion for making the world a better place by enabling those around me to strive for excellence.
- An insatiable fascination of people and technology, which drives me to find new ways to bring valuable innovation to the masses.
- Even though I do not have engineer in my title anymore I am still a geek at heart.
Service to SHPE has been a large part of my life. While at UCSD, I held various positions on the SHPE chapter executive board including President. Under my tenure, UCSD held a very successful Regional Leadership Conference. My student leadership roles ended with being the Region 2 Regional Student Representative where I worked tirelessly to keep Region 2 chapters united and I could boast about having a National Chapter of the Year in my region with UCLA.
As a professional, I was recruited straight out of college to lead the scholarship program and serve as University Relations Chairperson on the Silicon Valley Professional Chapter Executive board. SHPE-SV was a Professional Chapter of the Year award winner at the time. This chapter was full of great mentors and eventually I became president of the professional chapter and simultaneously chaired the first ever Region 1 and Region 2 West Coast Career Expo (WCCE). This was the most highly attended WCCE up until that date and it was the first time a woman had chaired the event. After moving to San Francisco, I served on the SHPE San Francisco board as the education and outreach coordinator, organizing some attendance record-breaking community outreach events. The last few years I have been serving at a more national level. I have been on various National Conference Committees as a lead and as the Elections committee chairperson. Among several scholarships and awards achieved throughout my SHPE career for various accomplishments; the most recent honor was receiving a SHPE President’s Award in 2010.
In addition to service in SHPE, I am frequently part of mentorship programs for K-12 students to learn more about STEM careers. I also serve on the alumni advisory board for the Computer Science and Engineering department at my alma mater. I really like to network professionally and hence I regularly participate in other professional organization’s events; looking for best practices to bring back to SHPE and finding new ways for organizations to partner on a more regional and national level.
If elected Region 1 Vice President, I plan on elevating Region 1 as a whole to being a high functioning collection of professional and student chapters. This means:
1. Enabling better lines of communication from the National entities to the professional chapters and between the various professional and student chapters in the region.
2. Building and maintaining strong corporate and partner relationships within the region.
3. Providing excellent opportunities for professional and community growth through quality regional programs.
I look forward to developing this plan more through the elections and if I am so blessed I will be able to put it into action if I win.
